The Uintah Basin's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is a branch of the Utah statewide  Earn it. Keep it. Save it. campaign aimed to strengthen family financial stability. Locally, VITA provides FREE income tax preparation to individuals and families who earn low-to-moderate incomes. The program also provides FREE financial education classes, resources, and referrals.

The VITA Program offers a variety of ways to volunteer- especially for those who may feel a bit intimated by the initial thoughts of (gasp) TAXES AND FINANCES! Don’t worry! It’s quite easy, fun, and most importantly rewarding!

On the Tax Side:

VITA provides all resource materials and training for volunteers to become IRS certified in tax law, although there are roles which do not require actual tax law certification. We offer 5 roles for volunteers to choose from- Greeter, Intake/Interviewer, Basic Certification, Advanced Certification, and Financial Integration. During the tax season, volunteers donate their time by preparing simple tax returns to members of the community- friends, families, and neighbors.

This volunteer opportunity is a great match for anyone who is interested in volunteering during the winter months (approximately December 1 - April 15), would like to learn a new skill, and/or enjoys serving people. Certification is an excellent resume builder and a perfect opportunity for any individual seeking experience in accounting, business, or other related fields. Continuing Education (CE) Credits are available for individuals currently working in these fields.

Financial Education:

The financial education aspect of VITA involves participation from volunteers who are interested in either assisting or teaching a "Financial First Aid" class. Training for this class is provided for free, including materials used to certify and in the classroom setting.

This volunteer opportunity is the perfect match for individuals who are interested in personal finance, as well as educating the public about budget management, asset building, credit, and saving for the future. These classes will occur during the late summer to fall time of year, however, classes taught by volunteers are flexible and dependent on volunteer availability.

Foster Grandparent Volunteers are senior’s ages 55 & older that serve as volunteer mentors, tutors, and in some cases caregivers for children and youth with special needs.  They serve in community organizations such as schools, hospitals, and youth centers.  While volunteering, Foster Grandparents strengthen their community by providing youth services that strained community budgets cannot afford and by building bridges that cross generations.  Foster Grandparent Volunteers must meet income eligibility requirements and are encouraged to serve an average of 15 hours per week.
